LONG BAY HOUSE
Project Information
Location: Long Bay, Auckland
This modern residence engages in a graceful interplay with its bay-front setting, framing sweeping views of the untamed horizon. Designed as a sanctuary along Auckland's rugged eastern coastline, the home embraces a slower, more contemplative way of living—one that invites respite from urban rhythms and reconnection with nature's cadence.
The exterior cladding draws poetic inspiration from the spectral forms of farm horses emerging through morning mist, their pale grey coats reinterpreted in a textured, monochromatic façade. The timber screens—digitally reimagined from the organic irregularity of rural fencing—create a dynamic geometric lattice that filters sunlight into ever-shifting patterns across interior surfaces.
Inside, the architecture continues its quiet conversation with the landscape. A fully open kitchen orchestrates an uninterrupted visual axis between north and south courtyards, dissolving boundaries between shelter and nature. Veined marble surfaces echo the twisted forms of wind-sculpted coastal vegetation, while hand-trowelled plaster walls mimic the soft undulations of sea-smoothed dunes. Each carefully considered material, paired with ambient lighting and a harmonious tonal palette, coalesces into an atmosphere of serene sophistication—a retreat that feels both grounded in its coastal context and elevated in its quiet refinement.
